When you are on the verge of stressing over too many details that need to be finalized, it is best to look for some of the wedding needs that really matter. Take a look at this quick guideline, to see how far you need to go with your own list of wedding day needs.

The When

One of the most stressful details for your wedding is finalizing the date for your special day. There are many who consider wedding dates on June or December but usually these are the times where a lot of couples tie the knot and it often costs more to do so, which is why it is best to consider several different dates so that you can settle with a specific date when everything else is laid out.

The Where

Along with the date of your wedding, the Wedding Photographer in Calgary also plays a vital role if your wedding day will push through as you expect it. Often the trouble is a particular venue can be booked ahead of time and your chosen date to be wedded may not match with the availability of the venue, ensuring that both date and venue work together guarantees that your special day pushes through as you had planned.

The What

A growing trend these days is themed weddings and if you and your significant other agree to a particular whimsical or special theme then planning it out in best detail will be very important. If you are not too keen with a theme however, most weddings do still follow a particular motif that you and your guests can follow, so it is best to have a particular selection at hand which you can decide on for your special day.

The How

It is also good if you can decide on how your entire wedding goes, especially how the entire reception or after-wedding party will turn out. You could look into the type of entertainment that you feel can best represent your love story or decide on the delicacies that can turn your day even more extraordinary.

Budget – it is very important to determine how much your budget is for the particular event or function you will be hosting.  You have to discuss this budget with your caterer before you proceed into hiring their services.  Of course, along with budget, the caterer needs to know how much people this budget of your will be served to.  Your budget will only be as good as the number of people it serves.  Even if your budget seems big, if the number of guests that needs to be served is also big, then simply put, your overall budget per guest goes down.

Food – prior to picking the catering service, you need to determine what type of food you want to serve your guests.  Some catering services excel in particular types of dishes.  It is crucial that the dishes you will have served compliment the tastes of your guests.  Make it a point to also have other options as you may have guests that are purely vegan in diet.

Theme – some catering services provide theme based services with which they have the table, chairs, and linen decorated with the theme of your preference.  This is very desirable when there is a particular color theme you want for the event.

Bison is a great red meat

Bison is a great red meat

Bison is a highly nutrient dense food because of the high relative proportion of protein, mineral, and other nutritional components to its caloric value. Bison has a full compliment of essential nutrients, and a great concentration of many of the essential fatty acids necessary for human well being. It is one of the best and most concentrated sources of iron available – nearly 3 times as much per ounce as is found in chicken. Bison meat is low in fat, and raised as naturally as possible.

Bison Your Healthy Red Meat Choice!

Bison is a red meat which is nutrient dense because of the proportion of protein, fat, minerals and fatty acids to its caloric value. Research shows bison is a healthy choice being lower in fat, calories and cholesterol than beef, pork or skinless chicken. Bison meat does not marble (fat interspersed in the muscle) like beef. The result is more red meat (protein), high in iron with less fat (calories) per pound. Since bison is a dense meat, you can feel more satisfied by eating less. Many who are seeking healthier lifestyles and practicing wellness are looking for just such a healthy red meat. It is also an industry rule that bison not be subjected to growth hormones or stimulants.

The value of bison is not what you pay, but what you get in return. Nutritionally you are getting more protein and nutrients with fewer calories and less fat.

The Lost Art of the Dinner Party

The Lost Art of the Dinner Party

When was the last time you went to a dinner party? Chances are, it has been a while. Thinking back on fond memories with friends and family, some of the best times have been in the comfort of someones’ home, tucking into delicious food and engaging in interesting conversations. There’s something about the comfort of being in a home environment that makes people feel more relaxed and comfortable – more so than being in a restaurant.

So why don’t people host dinner parties more often? There are many excuses why dinner parties aren’t more common – the primary reason most people cite is lack of time (either actual or perceived).

To do it right, the planning of a dinner party can seem daunting. You only have to have a look at some ‘how-to’ guides on the internet which detail preparation extending back weeks in advance. Kudos to those who can exact the time and attention that would normally be reserved for military operations.

But what about people like you and I who would really just like to connect with friends in their home, make their guests feel welcome and feed them well?

Here are some tips to host a great dinner party:

– Consider realistically how many people can fit comfortably in your home. While collapsible plastic lawn chairs do work in a pinch, it’s not ideal seating for someone to spend an evening in.

– Choose your menu ahead of time to suit your guests. Any specific preferences or dietary restrictions? Many of our menu items work extremely well in larger portions for dinner parties, contact our staff and together we can come up with just the right menu for you and your guests.

– The day of the party, set the table ahead of time.

– Give yourself time to get ready – you don’t want to still be ironing your clothes when guests arrive.

– Have drinks and hors d’oeuvres ready when your guests arrive.

– Make sure you have extra hangers and/or space for your guests coats and personal items.

– As the party comes to a close, be ready to serve tea and coffee and have some taxi numbers handy for your guests who seek alternative ways to get home.

Above all, relax, have fun and be merry! As the host, you set the tone for the evening.

Shiitake Mushrooms

Shiitake Mushrooms

Recently, a customer queried our use of shiitake mushrooms in our Duck Breast and Creamed Cabbage dish, why not use regular mushrooms?
It’s a good question – shiitakes have four to ten times the flavour of common white button mushrooms. In addition to their robust/pungent, woodsy flavour and meaty texture, shiitakes provide high levels of protein (18%), potassium, niacin and B vitamins, calcium, magnesium and phosphorus.
They also have natural antiviral and immunity-boosting properties and are sued nutritionally to fight viruses, lower cholesterol and regulate blood pressure. Lentinan, an immunostimulant derived from shiitakes, has been used to treat cancer, AIDS, diabetes, chronic fatigue syndrome, fibrocystic breast disease, and other conditions with impressive results.
So the next time you tuck into some tasty shiitake mushrooms, think of all the benefits – or, you can simply enjoy the rich flavour.

Consumer Trends

Consumer Trends

Why are so many many more people turning to convenient solutions when it comes to meals?

With the changing face of society, far less time is being allocated to food preparation. “My grandmother used to spend hours planning meals every day” says Indish owner Brent Kyle. That is quite a difference from a recent American study which showed that when it comes to modern day food preparation and clean up, men spend an average of 15 minutes per day, while women spend an average of 47.4 minutes.

What accounts for this change?

“Canadians have more money, less time, fewer domestic skills and less inclination to devote time to food related chores. As a result there is an increased demand for foods that can be prepared in a short period of time. This is not a new consumer trend; however, it has evolved over time. When convenience foods were first introduced, consumers were willing to accept a lower quality and poorer taste for the ability to prepare a meal in a short period of time. But today, consumers’ requirements for convenience foods are more sophisticated than ease and speed of preparation. Today, convenience foods must also include ease in purchasing and clean-up, nutrition, flavour and perceived value.”
